The Human Library

The Human Library creates a safe space to "check out" a Human Book and have honest conversations that explore the stereotypes and prejudices in society. Human Books hail from all walks of life - those who have been stereotyped or experienced prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, class, gender identity, lifestyle choices, disability, or other differences. Participants at the event 'read' the books by way of a one-on-one or small group conversations with the volunteer to learn about their experiences with discrimination. The Human Library provides the opportunity for attendees to listen, share, and ask questions of people they may never have spoken to otherwise. The Human Library is an international organization and movement that first started in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000. It aims to address people's prejudices by helping them to talk to those they would not normally meet. The organization uses a library analogy of lending people rather than books. This event takes place at the Osterville Village Library on Saturday October 18th at 11:30am You may come to the event anytime between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM to "read" these incredible books. Come with questions and an open mind. Readings are approximately 25 minutes for each book, so plan accordingly.
